Mrs. Virginia Louise (Bocook) Tanner, age 89, a resident of Brenham, Texas passed away on January 2, 2020 at her home in Kruse Village following an extended illness.
Louise was born April 28, 1930 in Haldeman, Kentucky to Earnest Glenmore and Nina Gertrude (Fugate) Bocook. She and her husband Fred met and married in Morehead Kentucky where she was teaching high school English and Fred was working on his undergraduate degree at Morehead State. She was working while he was in school not just because she was a year older than he, but because she graduated from high school at 16 and college at 19. They lived in several states before moving to Texas in the late 60s. They lived first in Denton, then Sun City Georgetown, and most recently Brenham, Texas.
Louise was a homemaker, retired teacher and elementary school librarian who was loved by her family and students. She was thrilled to be invited attend the 50th reunion of the Morehead High School class of 1954 where she received a certificate signed by the governor naming her an official Kentucky Colonel. She was active in the Baptist Church during her married years and was a involved in Baptist Women and mission groups. While she traveled all around the country in her later years, her most memorable trip was one to Russia in 1971 when she and Fred smuggled 15 Bibles into the country in their luggage and met with refugees at a Baptist Church there. Most recently she was a member of Brenham's First Baptist Church and enjoyed attending services and Sunday school.
Louise enjoyed being active in church, camping, traveling in her motorhome, and being a loving mother to her three children and a proud grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents and younger sister, Ella Mae (Bocook) Adams. Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Fred W. Tanner Jr of Brenham, Texas; Son Fred W. (Mary Beth) Tanner III of Dahlonega, GA; Daughter Sara Jane (Patrick) Janicek of Bellville, TX; Son Glenn Arthur (Laura) Tanner of San Marcos, TX; 4 grandchildren Josh, Greg, Matt, Marcella, Allison and 4 great grandchildren Rosalyn, Julie, Alex and Silas.
